This workshop will draw on findings of sociolinguistic research and discussions of participants’ experiences in a range of legal settings to explore:
⢠how storytelling and retelling works in everyday contexts and in the law
⢠relevance to evaluations of credibility and reliability in the law
⢠specific cultural and communication issues in Indigenous societies
⢠implications for lawyers working with Indigenous clients

This event is an ATO initiative which is part of its program to inform and assist practitioners in dealing with tax issues faced by their clients.
The seminar will cover the law and the “lore” of the Commissioner’s powers:
⢠What to expect when the ATO comes knocking.
⢠What the Commissioner’s powers mean to you in the possession of your own or your client’s information.
⢠How these powers apply to electronic communications and the storage of information on computer drives.
⢠The meaning in this context of access to buildings or places.
⢠Examples of particular situations the ATO has dealt with over a number of years.
⢠Limits and exceptions to the powers.
Proposed amendments to consolidate the powers.

· What do judges really want to see in written submissions
· How to be more persuasive on issues such as credit
· Helpful drafting techniques to use and avoiding irritations
The program faculty will include members of the Supreme Court of Queensland including The Hon. Justice Glenn Martin AM and senior members of the Bar.
BAQ1513A – Part 1 will be an overview sessions outlining the course requirement and other guidance.
In the next phase you will be required to submit a stale set of submissions for review by the judges and coaches.
BAQ1513B – Part 2 will be Saturday workshop program and you will engage in small groups working on submissions, discussing and receiving feedback and coaching.

ADMINISTRATIVE LAW: A PRACTICAL GUIDE TO “STANDING”
This practical session will commence with an informative overview bringing you up to date with the latest principles and concepts on the law of standing. To illustrate key points, our presenters will role play a mock hearing in which practical and real problems will be analysed and applied.
The session will be of particular use to government legal professionals and those at the private bar who wish to update their knowledge and hone their skills in this important area of practice.
Topics to be covered include:
⢠Recent decisions on the law of standing including:
Australian Society of Ophthalmologists v Optometry Board of Australia â [2013] QSC 350
Argos Pty Ltd v Corbell, Minister for the Environment and Sustainable Development â (2014) 315 ALR 44; [2014] HCA 50;
⢠Gathering the evidence – the key evidentiary aspects relevant to addressing Considerations on standing;
⢠Advocacy tips and traps for the unwary; and
⢠Important ethical considerations will be illustrated and discussed
⢠There will be opportunities for questions and discussion
