Deborah Russell garden dedication
12 November 2011
David Russell QC has marked the contribution of his wife, lawyer Deborah Russell, to their historic home, Jimbour, 24 kilometres north west of Dalby.
Mrs Russell died of breast cancer on 2 August this year, aged 60.
More than 300 people gathered to honour the memory of Deborah Russell and to dedicate to her the northern courtyard garden she had planned more than 30 years earlier, to complement the sandstone homestead built in 1877.
The guest-list included federal and state LNP members of parliament, law colleagues, friends dating back to childhood of both Deborah and David, their extended families, friends and the many skilled tradespeople who have worked on the restoration of the homestead and its grounds.
The new garden is infused with history — the design of the brick water feature and fountain were inspired by the design on a tile from one of the original bathroom floors.
Four newly-planted peach trees still taped to stakes are from the same stock as those planted at Jimbour by the explorer Ludwig Leichhardt who rested at Jimbour before setting out on his two of his expeditions in the 1800s.
Camelias along a covered walk from the house to the new kitchen building were grown from cuttings of the camellias at Government House planted by Deborah’s mother Lady (Georgina) Campbell, wife of a former Queensland Governor Sir Walter Campbell.
David and Deborah Russell met at law school where Deborah followed in her father’s footsteps, and met David who was heir to the Russell Pastoral Company empire, begun by his grandfather Wilfred Russell in the 1890s. They had one son, Andrew.
From 1997, David and Deborah continued the restoration of the sandstone mansion bought in 1923 by David’s grandparents, after it had been abandoned and became derelict.
David and Deborah oversaw the restoration of the house, the building of a new kitchen block and the restoration of the homestead as a grand gathering place for social occasions.
During the dedication ceremony, David Russell acknowledged the major contribution his wife had made to the life and history of Jimbour but lamented that she did not survive to ever live there permanently.
Mr Russell paid tribute to his wife’s courage, after her diagnosis, to encourage him to press on with building the northern garden, complete with its grand fountains, formal garden and brick pathways.
‘At a time Debs needed so much courage for herself, she had some for me and said ‘go ahead’,’ he said.
In another nod to the rich history of Jimbour, the formal dedication of the garden was made by Margaret McArthur-Onslow, the great granddaughter of Sir Joshua Peter Bell, who built the homestead.

Politics & persuasion at SLQ
State Library of Queensland is getting political this summer, showcasing the history of persuasion with Cane Toad Times and Queensland Votes. Visit www.slq.qld.gov.au/whats-on to find out more.
Cane Toad Times
In two bursts of creative mayhem, from 1977—1979 and again from 1983—1990, writers, cartoonists and political activists came together to produce the humorous magazine Cane Toad Times. Its obsessions included cane toads, Big Things, Bubbles Bathhouse and exposing Queensland corruption.
With protest march posters, original copies of Cane Toad Times, photographs, t-shirts and artwork by cartoonists including John Shakespeare, Matt Mawson, and Judy Dunn, the Cane Toad Times exhibition will evoke the feelings of restlessness and discontent which inspired a generation to create their own medium to fight for what they believed in.
